Yakuza 4 was an improvement over the third edition in every way, and what made its achievements even more interesting was the short time span between the release of the two versions. Yakuza 4 was released about a year after the previous version, and while the studio was developing several other titles concurrently with this project, the final product unexpectedly didn’t suffer from the usual problems of its annual franchises, and in all respects progressed.

Unlike usual, the story of Yakuza 4 doesn’t start with “Kazuma” and this time we’re alongside a new controlled character named Shun Akiyama. “Akiyama” is a Kamurocho-based underdog who is distinctly different from other Tokyo underdogs, firstly, there is no affiliation between Akiyama and yakuza groups and he is completely independent in his work, and secondly, Akiyama lends money to others and receives no benefit from them and it is enough for the applicants only to pass the test that Akiyama arranges for them.

For Akiyama, what is more important than the money itself and its return is the personality of the people and what they do with that money. Akiyama invests in the people and the role they will play in Kamurocho, and one person that Akiyama has high hopes for is Hiroaki Arai, a mid-level force in the Tojo group, and Akiyama hopes someone will see the damage caused by Kazuma Departure can fill gaps, but every wise person knows that nothing goes as expected in Kamurocho, and a sudden murder sparks a new war in the criminal world, leaving Akiyama’s fate tied to 3 other people.

In order to solve the narrative problems of the previous version, in Yakuza 4 we see a change in the formula that happens to be working well. The previous episodes’ focus on one character in stories that typically had many moving parts made some moments seem extra, and the presence of moments necessary for characterization sometimes disrupted the rhythm of the overall narrative. In this new formula, the story is divided into 4 parts, each part has its own hero, and the stories of these 4 heroes overlap at certain points during the narrative until they are fully connected at the end.

Enough talking about Akiyama, next is Taiga Saejima, a longtime Tojo member who was sentenced to death for murdering 18 members of a rival gang and has spent 25 years behind bars awaiting his verdict, but after all these years circumstances arise, he decides to escape from prison. The third person is Masayoshi Tanimura, a young police officer whose death, who was also a police officer, is linked to the story of “Taiga” 25 years ago. The last person is Kazuma, who again unintentionally gets caught up in the adventures he’s been trying to distance himself from completely for the last 5 years.

To these 4 characters we must add many secondary characters, positive and negative, all of which are very well paid and add color and brilliance to the narrative of the work’s secondary parts. The main story works well together with the charm of each part, and some of the franchise’s most memorable moments take place in this installment. Perhaps the only downside of the story is that we now know that the creators have the ability to create better narratives and will prove this problem in the next few episodes, but Yakuza 4 contained and is the best view of this series at the time of its release it still. Standing alone, it tells an interesting and compelling story.
